Winter in the White Mountains of New Hampshire is more than a season — it’s an experience. From world-class skiing and snowshoeing to scenic train rides, cozy pubs, and unforgettable adventures like dog sledding and fat-tire biking, this region transforms into a playground for every type of traveler. 1. Alpine Skiing: Cannon, Bretton Woods & Loon Mountain

The White Mountains are home to some of the best skiing on the East Coast — and three major ski resorts sit within a short drive of the Franconia Inn.

Cannon Mountain

Distance from the Inn: ~10 minutes

Pictured above, Cannon is a true New England classic: steep, rugged, fast, and beloved by locals. Known for its challenging terrain, breathtaking summit views, and the famous aerial tramway, Cannon is ideal for advanced skiers and adventurous intermediates.

Bretton Woods

Distance from the Inn: ~25 minutes

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Bretton Woods offers wide, perfectly-groomed runs, forgiving terrain, and some of the best glade skiing in the region. It’s consistently rated the #1 ski resort in the East for snow and grooming.

Loon Mountain

Distance from the Inn: ~25 minutes

Loon provides a balanced mix of beginner slopes, terrain parks, and intermediate cruisers. It’s a perfect mountain for families and groups with mixed skill levels.

Why stay at Franconia Inn?

Because after a day on the slopes, you return to a quiet, peaceful setting instead of a crowded base area — and you can warm up by the fireplace or grab an après-ski drink at Peaks Pub.

2. Cross-Country Skiing

If you want something quieter than downhill skiing, XC skiing in the White Mountains is unbeatable — and if you stay at the Franconia Inn, you don’t even have to leave the property.

Take a quick ride around the property or a longer outing into the local trail systems of Franconia, Littleton, or Bethlehem. All three towns have easily accessible Gear Libraries with fat bikes.

6. Dog Sledding Adventures

Dog sledding is one of the most unforgettable winter experiences in the region. Several local outfitters offer guided rides and “musher for a day” programs.

The winter of 2023/2024 in Franconia was marked by unseasonably warm temperatures, more rain than snow, and it left us wondering: "What is the future for cross-country skiing at the Franconia Inn?" With very little snow to work with, we were only able to be open for a handful of decent ski days which was a major disappointment for our Nordic ski enthusiasts. This season's winter put a lot of that uncertainty in the rearview mirror. With over 5 feet of snow and consistently cold temperatures, the cross-country ski conditions were some of the best we've ever experienced here at the Franconia Inn. Here's a look at how this incredible ski season played out in the North Country.
