Adventure Like a Local

September 23, 2025

When I am on vacation, my ideal day is to NOT feel like a tourist but rather immerse myself in a new place and put myself in a local’s shoes, imagining how it might feel to actually live somewhere else, even if it’s just for a day.

Rent a Bike!

Since Franconia is (very) small, you can enjoy a local’s day on just one street.  It’s the perfect bike ride or short drive from the Inn.  Start your “local adventure” by borrowing a bike from Bobby Big Ring at White Mountain Bike Shop. Located directly next to the Inn, Bob has bikes of all shapes and sizes, including e-bikes if you're looking for a relaxing cruise into town. Once you've selected your method of transportation, pedal two miles to Franconia’s Main Street where my perfect day starts at the Franconia Coffeehouse, which you can find by following your nose.

Downtown Franconia

From a cup of delicious black coffee to a fancy frothy latte, usually named after an oldies song, you’ll love the caffeine fix.  Try the Jolene, a tiramisu latte served hot or iced that Dolly would love!  Coffee in hand, you can check out the ever changing local thrift shop next to Franconia Coffeehouse.  You simply can’t leave empty handed and whether it’s the fantastic cup of coffee or the fact that the shop’s proceeds support Veterans, you’re already feeling pretty good.

Franconia Artwalk

Tucked behind the shops is a trail that follows the picturesque Gale River and from which you can follow the Franconia Art Walk, a relatively short and flat scenic walk with, thankfully, NO elevation for a change.  Original works are nestled in the woods and each turn can surprise you with unique pieces such as a giant sculptured hand or a quirky metal robot.  The exhibits change from time to time, and the walk has wooden chairs and benches to stop and finish that coffee and really take in the river, trees and artwork.

Iron Furnace & Garnet Hill
Peak’s Pub at Franconia Inn, a casual dining option at a White Mountain resort.

At the end of the walk, you’ll be amazed to come upon an original Iron Furnace!  Sound unsual?  Well, it is.  It is new Hampshire’s sole surviving example of a post Revolutionary furnace for smelting local iron ore.  Almost as importantly, it is also the name of the local brewery which is just across the street from the actual Iron Furnace.  More on that later (not too much later, but we have to give them time to get the taps open).

In the meantime, check out the deals at the newly expanded Garnet Hill outlet.  You’ll find something that you just can’t live without every time you walk through their doors.  And, since they are one of the Inn’s favorite neighbors and supplier of the Inn’s lovely bath towels, they offer Inn guests a discount on purchases.

Grab a Bite to Eat
Franconia Inn, a historic White Mountain resort with on-site dining and scenic views.

After redecorating your house from Garnet Hill, take a walk to Hungry Bear for a quick lunch where you can enjoy a delicious sandwich, salad, or smoothie on their front porch if weather allows. This is also a great spot for breakfast if you're looking to grab something quick before a hike.

If lunch revives you and you’re looking for a beautiful spot to bike or walk, head to the Fox Hill trails for a longer walk along the west part of the Gale River and, weather permitting, take a quick dip in the swimming holes along the river. The shaded trails offer a serene setting to relax and immerse yourself in nature.

Iron Furnace Brewery

Is Iron Furnish Brewing open yet?  If so, head there for whatever is on tap.  Perhaps Tramline, a nod to the iconic tram that takes riders up nearby Cannon Mountain. This tasty dark brown ale features notes of chocolate, toffee, and nuts.  Enjoy it (or one of their other outstanding offerings) on the brewery’s new deck or in an Adirondack chair on their front lawn.

Dinner at the Inn

But be sure to save room for dinner at the Inn!  It’s just a short ride back where the pool, hot tub, and the Inn’s dinner menu and incredibly creative cocktails are waiting, all of which will ensure that the day ends on as sweet a note as it started.  Be sure to chat with our innkeepers about their favorite activities in the area. We are here to help you adventure like a local!

The winter of 2023/2024 in Franconia was marked by unseasonably warm temperatures, more rain than snow, and it left us wondering: "What is the future for cross-country skiing at the Franconia Inn?" With very little snow to work with, we were only able to be open for a handful of decent ski days which was a major disappointment for our Nordic ski enthusiasts. This season's winter put a lot of that uncertainty in the rearview mirror. With over 5 feet of snow and consistently cold temperatures, the cross-country ski conditions were some of the best we've ever experienced here at the Franconia Inn. Here's a look at how this incredible ski season played out in the North Country.
